I’m not good at gate keeping some of my favorite locations that Kansas City has to offer for your photo sessions. If you’re a photographer, take it and run with it. Every photographer will see and photograph differently in each location. If you’re one of my mamas (or hoping to be) – just know I’ve got you covered with these and other location options. During our Design Consultation I’ll recommend locations for you based on your specific family style and needs.
Kansas City is filled with stunning, family-friendly locations that make your photos feel like you — natural, connected, and full of personality.
Here are seven of my favorite Kansas City photo locations that families love (and why I keep coming back to them):
It’s hard to beat the view from the WWI Museum and Memorial grounds. With sweeping cityscapes, clean architecture, and wide-open lawns, it’s one of Kansas City’s most iconic backdrops. You’ll enjoy a sophisticated timeless look on these grounds, year round (it’s gorgeous in the snow, ask me how I know!).
Best for: Families who love big views and classic Kansas City energy.
Pro tip: Pair this location with Union Station if you’d like — they’re right across the street, and together they create a perfect mix of city skyline and historic beauty.
You can’t get more Kansas City than Union Station. Between the grand architecture, soft light, and trusting me to get to the balcony with the best light (I’ve got it down), it’s perfect for photos that feel elegant but approachable. The outdoor areas nearby offer plenty of variety without feeling crowded.
Best for: Families who want a polished, timeless look with city charm.
Pro tip: Morning light here is beautiful for indoors — and parking’s a breeze.
If your family loves color, texture, and creativity, the Crossroads is your place. Hitting the actual streets of KC is always worthwhile. With its murals, brick walls, and vibrant personality, it gives us endless options for a variety of backgrounds. Every block has something unique, and it’s perfect for families who want a more modern, urban edge.
Best for: Families who love personality, color, and an artsy feel.
Pro tip: Yes, Seniors can do multiple changes in a painted alley with my changing tent.
Wide open skies, golden grass, tremendous oaks, and lake views — Shawnee Mission Park is one of my go-tos for families who want a natural, relaxed look. There’s room for kids to play and it’s so big that we can enjoy relative privacy.
Best for: Families who love nature and those glowy, golden-hour portraits (but it’s also gorgeous in mid day or afternoon and has the tree cover we need for perfect soft light).
Pro tip: You can have your cake and eat it, too, with dock photos after your fields and treelines.
If you love a smaller, hometown vibe with all the charm, Downtown Lee’s Summit is perfect. The brick textures, cozy alleys, and pleasant awnings create a warm, inviting atmosphere. It’s an easy yes.
Best for: Families who love the charming small town feel
Pro tip: Plan a weekday evening to catch that perfect soft sunset light + Poppy’s afterward for ice cream.
If your family loves a variety of natural backdrops, James A. Reed is hard to beat. With lakes, trails, and wild grasses, it’s the perfect spot for photos that feel laid-back and like a breath of fresh air.
Best for: Families in Lee’s Summit that want to stay close to home but feel farther out.
Pro tip: Bring the family back to wander or fish another day – we only scratch the surface of all that this location has to offer with one session.
One of my most-loved locations, the Nelson-Atkins lawn and architecture offers timeless Kansas City beauty. The light bounces softly off the stone, and the mix of modern and classic makes it ideal year-round. There’s big changes in store for the grounds – it will be lovely, but get in some before photos with your family to enjoy the classic look.
Best for: Families who want something refined, simple, and effortlessly beautiful.
Pro tip: We can use various parts of this space at different times of day, and it really sings during midafternoon and sunset. Don’t ever worry about different light – trust your photographer to know what to do with it.
Every family has a different rhythm — and part of my job as your Kansas City family photographer is helping you find the location that fits it best. During your Design Consultation, we’ll talk through what you love, the look you’re going for, and how to make your session feel easy and natural from start to finish.
Because your photos should reflect your family — not just the scenery.
If you have a special-to-you-location, I’d also love to hear about that. Let’s start planning.
