I was as Surprised
As anyone.

I’m Joanna, a wife and mom of four littles. I love being Mama. We explore nature, read aloud as a family, and my husband and I have relinquished the backyard to the kids where they enjoy their (affectionately dubbed) “mud pit” among the green space. I love to watch their connections, with me and with each other. For years I didn’t realized where these observations would lead, and what adventures the camera, which I often found hanging around my neck, promised. I’ve appreciated art my entire life and have a background in graphic design, but this mom with a camera got caught off guard by a sudden knowing of fresh possibility. Here was a newfound passion, photographing families, that made all the sense in the world when retracing my steps.

I discovered joy in showing other families their own connections with my camera. I want to show them what I see. It’s beautiful and it’s genuine. As a mother, I know how joyful/messy/loud/serene/raw/delightful family really is. It’s rewarding for me to get an inside peek into a family’s personality and interactions, knowing the importance it will mean to capture it. Jumping into photographing families was one of the biggest surprises of my life, and one of the most meaningful ones.
